The first deployment of the TARC Mobile Ham Radio Station was in April 2023 at St. John Catholic School in North Charleston where the students learned all about Amateur Radio and had an opportunity to make their first ham radio contact. The event was such a huge success that TARC was invited back this fall to teach monthly classes on electronics and wireless technology to students in grades 5 through 8. Our lesson for Nov 10 was to teach them how to build and operate an AM Crystal Radio. Many thanks to all the TARC members who donated the crystal radio kits and to the following members who assisted the six student teams to build their kits: Stephen (K4OPZ), Tim (KQ4JVQ), Tom (AJ4UQ), Glenn (WA4NMW), Tom (W4ID), Frank (K1FHT) and Jim (KO4MNB). It was a great learning experience for everyone in helping the kids wind their coils, without getting the magnet wire tangled, and fastening components on to the baseboards. Next month, we will be field testing the radios at the school with a 40’ long wire and a good ground so that they can take them home to show Mom and Dad what they built before Christmas break.
