The Tri-County STEMersion Student Camp is a unique program designed to advance hands-on STEM skills and introduce rising 9th and 10th graders to local career opportunities. As such, TARC was invited to explain and demonstrate wireless radio technology using our MHRS in the ECPI University parking lot in North Charleston. Glenn, WA4NMW; Steve, KO4AFL; and Jim KO4MNB, hoisted our HF and VHF antennas on the roof of the trailer and connected them up to our IC-7300 and ID-5100 radios. We had about 50 students come through the trailer in small groups for a tutorial and then a HF demonstration talking with several POTA stations on 20 meters.
The students then had an opportunity to talk on 2 meters to Jim Self, KW4PW, on the other end in Goose Creek through our local repeater system. The students were thrilled to have spoken on a radio for the first time. We invited them to attend our Introductory Class on July 11 at the Cynthia Hurd Library to learn more about our training and testing program. The organizers asked TARC if we would come back in the fall for another event.
