This annual event is dedicated to Cynthia Graham Hurd, the former manager of the Hurd/ St. Andrews Library. Mrs. Hurd served the Charleston County Public Library for 31 years until her life tragically ended on June 17, 2015, in the Mother Emanuel Church mass shooting. Mrs. Hurd had a passion for helping others and serving her community, and this event is being held to inspire others to do the same.
TARC was invited to support Community Day with our Mobile Ham Radio Station. Steve KO4AFL towed the trailer to the Library and the crew began to set up antennas and get the generators and radios working. John KK4JS worked the IC-7300 on 40m FT-8 with an EFHW antenna. Dave AE4ZR and Tom W4ID worked the FTDX-10 on 20m CW and SSB on a 17’ vertical. Jim KO4MNB worked 2m VHF with Tom AJ4UQ on the other end to talk to the kids who were delighted to talk on a ham radio for the first time.
Finally, Stephen Behr K4OPZ had a table set up outside the trailer to teach community members, even Charlie the RiverDog, how to send their name in Morse Code. The News 2 TV crew came by to film us operating inside the trailer and interviewed Steve.
Even though it was 90 degrees outside the AC kept it a cool 75 degrees inside even with the side door open. TARC will be back on the Library on July 11 to give an introductory presentation on our training course to take the license exam at the Library. Thank you to everyone who made this a very successful and fun event.
