With Monday July 5th being a holiday I decided I would try to get an early “late shift” activation at K-0518 Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. I was hoping to catch KN4SWS on a park to park as part of the “breakfast club” but he was already done for the morning by the time I was on the radio. I was able to get 25 contacts before the boat landing started to get busy. I decided to look at the map and make a multi park activation out of it. So I packed up and moved off to K-3876 Hampton Plantation for another 25 QSOs allowed me to complete the Warthog. I then figured I was already out so why not catch another for the Rhino and off to K-5489 Wee Tee State Forest I went. The band were not as nice so I ended it at 19 QSOs. I was out of cell coverage at this point so as a good motorcycle enthusiasts I didn’t want to back track and as long as I have gas in the tank I’m not lost so I went on down the road. Stopped at a gas station for a drink and to check for another park. I found I was close to K-8149 Oak Lea WMA I said why not its a newer park. On the way I realized that would only give me four parks so I hit the map and found K-2910 Poinsett State park which is a double with K-5486 Manchester State Forest. I headed to Poinsett before Oak Lea so I would be pointed back at the house. 24 QSOs at Poinsett and my battery died. Now I’m disappointed because I have traveled around the state and I’ve got to pack it in at 4 parks. On the way out of the park my 2 meter radio catches the ID of the Sumter repeater. The lightbulb in my head clicks on and I realize i can connect to the power input of my mobile radio thankfully I use power poles for everything. Off to Oak Lea WMA and unplug the mobile radio to connect the HF for 11 quick contacts completing the Cheetah. Now I’m looking at adding solar to my POTA setup.
Sounds like a fun day.
Fast thinking made you a cool cat, Cheetah!
I was using my ft-891 into the mfj big ears antenna for all but oak lea, where I used the wrc on the trunk mount due to the power line over where I parked.
Logging was done via the hamrs app on a lightweight Sony vaio.
Hey congrats on the successful day of fun.
What was your rig and antenna setup? How are you logging?
